Webinar | ICT-mediated citizen engagement: Voice or Chatter?

In this webinar, IT for Change will present the results of eight empirical multi-country case studies of citizen engagement through ICTs they undertook. This research, funded by Making All Voices Count, explored in each case how new forms of participation were shaped by IT, how IT affected power relations between government and citizens, and how the interactions between different actors continuously shape governance. This research provides insights into how citizen engagement using IT should be evaluated and highlights policy issues and governance practices that matter for meaningful, IT-based, citizen engagement.

About our guest speakers

Deepti Bharthur is a Research Associate at IT for Change. She contributes to academic, action, and policy research in the areas of e-governance and digital citizenship, data economy, platforms and digital exclusions. She has also coordinated and co-developed design based digital interventions for gender training and leads fund-raising and grant development activities at the organization.  She received her PhD in Media and Communication from Bowling Green State University in 2015, where her thesis work was on the policy architecture of rural connectivity in India.

Rosie McGee is a senior Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies in the UK. She currently coordinates the Research, Evidence and Learning component of Making all Voices Count. Over the past 10 years she has conducted and managed extensive research on accountable governance, power and politics, including co-leading a major Review of Impact and Effectiveness of Transparency and Accountability in 2010-11 . With a background in international NGO advocacy, she has worked extensively in Latin America and East and southern Africa. Among her current roles she convenes the Masters programme in Power, Participation and Social Change at IDS.
