Navigating the Future: Making Headway on Sustainability for Social Accountability Organizations

GPSA Working Paper 2 now available

Navigating the Future: Making Headway on Sustainability for Social Accountability OrganizationsThe Global Partnership for Social Accountability’s Working Paper No 2, ‘Navigating the Future: Making Headway on Sustainability for Social Accountability Organizations’ by Lester Salamon, Stephanie Geller and Wojciech Sokolowski (Johns Hopkins University) explores opportunities for civil society organizations working in social accountability to navigate the path to financial sustainability by applying lessons learned from other social purpose organizations. Like other nonprofit organizations, SAcc organizations face significant pressures to make their operations more financially sustainable and less dependent on grant funding—particularly grant funding from abroad. The paper draws on a wide variety of sources, including a substantial body of literature, numerous interviews, organizational websites, and an analysis of recent trends in nonprofit finance to suggest five concrete strategies that SAcc organizations of this type can usefully consider. Intended as a ‘thought piece’, the results present new ways of thinking about public goods and are applicable to institutions across sectors and social interests.
