The World Bank has embraced “social accountability” as participation and, more recently, citizen engagement. If social accountability is not a clear and precisely defined concept, is it still a useful construct? We decided to ask our Global Partners what term they use to describe “social accountability”. We also asked for the term in their own language, if other than English, as well as a translation of this back into English. We received 41 responses that revealed a diversity of terms , including “citizen feedback,” “participatory governance,” “ethical solidarity,” etc.
